Repair patch lawns and damaged edges or sow new lawns this month. Hang wasp traps in fruit trees to reduce dame to ripening fruits. Pot up chives, parsley, and other, herbs to bring indoors in autumn. Plant daffodils, crocus, iris, fritillaries and other spring-flowering bulbs. Cut down fruit canes of summer raspberries and other cane fruits.

Carefully dig up gladioli, dahlias and other tender bulbs to store over winter. October is the ideal month to plant garlic outside for crops next summer. Insulate the inside of your greenhouse with bubble polythene. Bring tender plants indoors or under cover before conditions turn cold. Sow corn salad land cress and salads for late winter and spring crops.

Clear borders by cutting down perennials and digging up bedding. Collect fallen leaves and mix with other materials on the compost heap. Plant tulips in patio pots, or in bold groups in borders. Put hose reels in the shed, and wrap and insulate around taps. Take hardwood cuttings from dogswood, currants and other shrubs. |
