Hardy annuals like Pheasant's Eye are great for providing almost instant colour in summer borders and make splendid gap fillers. Scarlet Chalice is one of the showiest annual flowers use to edge a border or as a colourful bedding plant.  It produces a fine show of red and black blooms just about anywhere.
